Storytelling: Culture Connection

This is a set of podcasts that showcases my storytelling skills. I started with comedy, then stuck with art. I tried to relate these podcasts to people within our 18-34 demographic with artists my age.

The role of a podcast host balances editing, writing, and mic presence and delivery. Scripts can be three to four minutes in length, but I spent lots of time making sure it flows while engaging the listener with one-to-one communication.

I became more free with my writing, trying to relate with my own stories and lessons. It’s important that people don’t just know my name as a host, but they feel connected too.

Production: New Music Now

This demo shows a compilation of podcasts I did for musicians in the Grande Prairie during my final month of classes. The production quality and flow was a bigger jump from the month prior.

I still do interviews, write and record my scripts, and edit, but I achieved a better sense of flow and pacing by letting the music and guests breathe. Music indicates a new topic while speakers feel natural while telling the important story.

It was hard to schedule so many musicians, but my experience with podcasts allowed me to work twice as efficiently while delivering a better output.

Video Editing: Elf on the Sauce

This was a video that took a creative spin on an existing movie, and I chose the style of my favourite Christmas movie, Elf.

I developed, planned, filmed, and edited the video all on my own, which was both fun and challenging. This showed a good sense of pacing and clean edits, and it was accompanied by the Elf soundtrack which tied it all together.

It was difficult to film without anyone else behind the camera in a cramped location, but the output also shows my potential working with a team in filming videos.

Production: Video Community Calendar

This was my first opportunity to create short-form content for Evolution’s YouTube channel. I scout for new events every weekend and create a guide in the area.

This was my first attempt at videos in the style of quick vlogs. The editing was a quick process, but the casual phone filming is what makes it look modern and authentic, I still had to map out a shot list to make sure pacing is snappy.

While I know how to operate professional video cameras, filming with a phone for this style of content is currently relevant to many business if they need more engagement with their target audience.

Performance: On-Air Host

My proudest example of vocal performance was engaging with a real audience as the radio host of our campus station. Every few minutes, I operate the sound mixer, make sure news and sports speakers start on time, and prepare hooks and engaging personal stories ahead of time.

I’m constantly writing, micromanaging, and making sure I can find ways to engage listeners with local events. It’s a mix of fast-paced creative writing, organizing, and delivering a good performance that has one-to-one engagement.

With a personal story presented to a real audience, I felt comfortable talking on-air and avoiding a reader voice.
